TECHNIQUES FOR DEALING WITH PROBLEMS OF ATTITUDE AND CONDUCT

  1. Prevent conduct problems from arising by:

    1. Showing sympathy and an understanding of problems.

    2. Have a genuine liking for girls.

    3. Show no favoritism.

    4. Employ democratic methods.

    5. Have faith in the girls to accomplish tasks and to do the right thing.

    6. Be fair in decisions.

    7. Have a sense of humor.

    8. Remember that if girls are involved in doing things they enjoy, problems will not usually arise.

  2. Principles for handling behavior problems:

    1. Get behind the act--that is, find out the reason for the act. Be interested not so much in what was done by why it was done.

    2. Create a sense of responsibility--not fixing the blame.

    3. Moralizing doesn't help.

    4. In trying to bring girls around to some desirable decision, the method of interrogation that should be used is "don't you think that...?".

  3. Methods to use to solve problems of discipline if they arise:

    1. Person-to-person talks without lecturing, discuss with the girl possible reasons for her conduct and consequences of her behavior.

    2. Group pressure - the group, under leader guidance, works out its own solution.

  4. If punishment has to be used at a last resort, keep in mind:

    1. Never use physical punishment.

    2. Keep cool.

    3. Punishment should follow the offense as soon as possible.

    4. If punishment is deprivation, deny something she likes very much to do.

    5. Performance of extra work duties may be employed.

    6. Punishment should be fair in type and amount.

    7. Girls should be aware of reasons for fairness of punishment.

  5. Most behavior problems arise around two kinds of personalities:

    1. The girl who withdraws, known as an intorvert. The leader should find ways to releasing her energy.

    2. The girl who wants to run the groupm the extrovert. Find ways of helping harness her own energy.

    3. BUT--

    4. Don't overlook the "middle of the road" girl.
